Symantec Takes Aim at Windows Vista Security

Symantec Corp. is releasing four white papers attacking the security of Windows Vista, Microsoft Corp.'s new desktop operating system.Researchers at the developer of desktop security software examined three areas of improved Windows security in Vista: user account control, memory protections, and kernel-level protection. They also tested whether malware that worked on Windows XP also affected computers running Vista. The findings concluded that 3%

of existing backdoors, 4% of keyloggers, 2% of Trojans, and 2% of spyware can successfully exploit holes in the Vista OS and can survive a reboot of the system.Symantec researchers also took only one week to write the code to deactivate some of Vista's kernel protection technologies.Symantec sells antivirus software for the Windows OS.
