Insurance Scams and Building Contractors

Insurance fraud is more common that people realize. Not just the numbers reported but a lot of insurance fraud is not found or unreported. Just recently in Houston 7 people were charged in $1.2 million insurance scam. Apparently they decided to burn their own house down to collect the insurance money.

Sometimes insurance scams are in the form of building and repair contractors. Unfortunately there are contractors that prey on people’s fears and

I live in Massachusetts and received a speeding ticket in Rhode Island. I know that MA is not part of the DLC. Will my speeding ticket information be forwarded to MA and/or my MA insurance company? Just wondering if my insurance in MA will be effected

Massachusetts is not part of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) as you noted however they have agreements with most other states to exchange information regarding tickets that licensed drivers receive out of state.

According to the Massachusetts driver's manual, located at the MA Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV), MA has arranged to share driving record and criminal violation information with other states. The MA RMV does not list which states

I have a suspended license due to a lapse in my auto insurance. I just got insurance with another company. How do I go about getting my license reinstated? And how much does that cost in the state of Florida?

If you own a vehicle with at least four wheels and are registering it, you must have Florida insurance. Thus all registered cars in Florida require Florida auto insurance.

Florida's minimum auto insurance coverage of $10,000 personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 property damage liability (PDL) is required as long as you have a valid Florida tag, even if the vehicle is in another state or inoperative. There are no exemptions in the law

I am considering starting a business, in the State of California, which would require me to drive other peoples cars on a very regular basis (2 to 3 times a day). What type of insurance would I require for this purpose? Would normal car insurance cover me

If you are going to be driving cars for business reasons or for profit you would normally need a special business / commercial policy since you will be driving other people's cars for reason other then personal use. Your personal insurance would not cover you for business purposes plus you will likely be required to have higher limits due to the nature of your work.

We believe business liability coverage will be required if you are going to

Why does your car insurance rise if you have a 2 door car? Does it cost more to insure a two door vehicle?

Two door vehicle do not always cause your insurance to rise since individual insurance companies have their own rating systems, however many 2 door cars are deemed to be sports cars and thus may cost a little more to insure.

A sports vehicle will be rated higher by most insurance companies than a family sedan. This is due to sports vehicles parts normally cost more to repair plus they are statistically in more accidents at higher speeds, thus appear to insurance underwriters as more of a risk.

In Georgia what is the definition of an auto lapsed policy? For example, if the policy expired on July 2nd and a new policy was purchased on July 8th of same year, would this be a lapse in policy with $25 lapse fee?

As you are likely aware Georgia insurers must electronically report insurance information, including if your insurance has been terminated or if there is a lapse.

The Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) defines a lapse as 10 or more days where the records show that your motor vehicle was not covered by an auto insurance policy. So if you let your car insurance policy expired on July 2nd and purchase a new policy on July 8th it would appear that you are within the 10 day gap period that GA allows.

If some one has Oklahoma license, got ticket in OK and took care of it (paid the ticket) then moved to Texas, is the OK ticket going to show up in TX records? Will it be on the Texas driving record and how could it affect insurance.

The Texas Department of Public Safety notes that out of state violations are placed on a Texas driving record, however it does not mention if they are brought over from your previous state's driving record or not. This does mean for certain that if you had a TX license and received say a speeding ticket in Oklahoma that a conviction for this offense would go on a TX driving record.

We asked the TX DPS if prior driving records are transferred

From Maryland - our vehicle, 1998 Taurus in good condition, was hit while parked. The other vehicle left the scene immediately. Witnesses provided description of other vehicle with a partial tag number so far, no luck identifying this vehicle or owner.

Yes, normally even though this accident was not your fault your collision deductible would still be due.

The Maryland Insurance Administration definesР’В a deductible asР’В the amount you agree to be responsible for in the event of damage to your vehicle (i.e. accident, fire or vandalism). If you look at their second example, vandalism, that would be an incident which you would not be at fault for but also like the hit and run would be responsible for the deductible for your coverages used to repair the car.
