A.G. Cuomo Clamps Down on Health Insurers

N.Y. Attorney General Andrew Cuomo sought explanation yesterday from health insurers Aetna Inc. [ticker: AET] and Cigna Corp. [ticker: CI] about their methodologies for recommending doctors to patients. Cuomo claimed that the insurers’ physician-ranking system is confusing, at best, and deceptive, at worst.Cuomo disagreed with the use of payment-claims data, as opposed to clinical information, to steer people toward specific physicians. instance, Cuomo claimed, the insurers may recommend doctors who cost less but are less qualified.Last month, Cuomo told insurer United HealthCare that it could only introduce a doctor ranking in the state with his approval.Cuomo compared the physician rankings to various forms of profit-sharing taking place between schools and student lenders, a practice he has condemned for months. In many cases, student aid officials were given personal incentives for sending business to certain lenders.
